There are different types of terry cotton, with different weights, grammages and characteristics: here is a brief guide to choosing the ideal one for every occasion.
The origins of terry cotton
In the past, other fabrics such as linen, plain cotton, and later honeycomb fabric were mainly used to dry the body.
Over the decades, more and more attention also began to be paid to the aesthetic aspect of terry cotton: color ranges increased, embroidery, designs and prints with a jacquard effect were made, side bangs were added as decoration, and towels and bathrobes began to be matched with bathroom furniture.
How terry cotton is made
Cotton is a material known to be hydrophilic: its structure is made of cotton yarns in which two warps are woven, a bottom thread and a curl thread, thus twisted into curls.
The high density of the cotton "curls" serves to increase the drying capacity of the fabric, echoing the surface structure of the sea sponge and its ability to dry.
The curl warp is thus the part most capable of capturing and retaining water and may be present on one side only or, more frequently, on both sides, precisely to increase the drying capacity of the fabric.
However, not all terry cotton are the same: their weight may vary and with it some specific characteristics.

The different grammage of the sponge
The grammage represents the weight in grams per square meter of fabric and is a clear indicator of product quality: the higher the grammage the higher the quality (and with it consequently the price). A quality product ranges roughly from 300 grams upwards.
Light grammage: 350 to 400 gr/sqm
These terrycloths are lightweight and low in bulk, so they are particularly suitable for use after showering at the gym or for carrying in your suitcase while traveling.
We do not have bathroom linens of this grammage; in fact, all our towels and bathrobes start at 400 gr/sqm and up.
Medium grammage: 400 to 500 gr/sqm
This type of grammage is the one generally most widely used; it is comfortable and soft and maintains excellent leather-drying ability.

High grammage: 500 gr/sqm and up
