How to wash a duvet in the washing machine

Before putting your duvet in the closet, a crucial step is to wash and sanitize it properly. The first recommendation to follow is to read the label to determine how it should be treated and if it's suitable for machine washing. If you can machine wash your duvet, there are some precautions to consider and tips to follow.

What to check before you start

First, check the capacity of your washing machine's drum: it must be large enough to hold the duvet without ruining it during washing.

  • For a Twin Duvet, the ideal is to have a drum with a capacity of 7 kg.
  • For a Double Duvet, on the other hand, you need a drum of at least 9-10 kg.

The duvet swells during washing, and having a basket that is too small can ruin the filling.

Remember to wash the duvet separately from other garments, including the duvet cover, because color loss can ruin it. Also, pay special attention to the type of filling because it changes the type of washing to be done.

How to machine wash goose duvets

If you have a duvet with goose down filling, you should machine wash it using the program designed for duvets or by selecting a wash cycle for cotton products, with a maximum temperature of 40°C.

For the spin cycle, set it to 800/900 rpm, similar to other types of down.

Use a non-aggressive liquid detergent combined with a small amount of vinegar or baking soda instead of softener, and place them in the detergent dispenser.

Additionally, you can place tennis balls in the drum to help evenly distribute the padding.

After determining how to machine wash a goose duvet, let's explore the proper drying method. First, it's advisable to shake the duvet to allow the feathers inside the filling to regain their proper position. If you have a dryer, it's recommended to use it at low temperatures, as it will help fluff up the duvet through its air jet. Alternatively, air dry the duvet outdoors in a horizontal position, turning it over periodically to ensure even drying. Under optimal conditions, it typically takes a couple of days for the duvet to dry thoroughly, especially on a sunny, breezy day.

  • Duvets made from bamboo and corn: wash at 60°C on a gentle cycle, and air dry in an open area.
  • Duvets made from Tussah silk (raw silk): wash at 40°C.
  • Duvets made of merino wool and Swiss pine: these products are not washable.

How to properly store the duvet after washing

After thorough drying, either in a dryer at low temperatures for delicate items or air-dried in a shaded area (never in direct sunlight), and if it's a goose down duvet, gently shake it to reposition the feathers. Then, it's advisable to place the duvet in its appropriate duvet cover bag or specially made bags with adequate ventilation. Store it carefully in a closet or a dark, dry place until its next use.

For goose down duvets, avoid storing them in vacuum bags as they can damage the duvet.

Additionally, you may consider using anti-moisture bags for added protection against dampness.
